How to Charge a Ni-Cad Power Tool Battery

Using portable power tools makes working on projects much easier then when your only choice was a power tool and miles of extensions cords to reach from the electrical socket to where you are working. If you have used one then you know that when the battery runs out, it can cause serious delays in your project as you wait for it to charge. A good practice is to keep two batteries for your tool. While one is in use, you can charge the other Ni-Cad power tool battery for makita BL 1830.
Plug your Ni-Cad battery charger into a power source.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions to remove the Ni-Cad battery from the tool you wish to charge. Most Ni-Cad batteries will pull out of the base of the handle of your power tool, but some may also have a safety retaining clip holding them in place that will need to be unlocked before you can pull the Dewalt DW9071 battery out.
Insert the Ni-Cad battery into the charger so the battery is upside down. The narrow shaft of the battery goes into the charger and the wide base of the battery should be pointing towards the ceiling. Watch for the battery indicator light on your charger to begin to flash--this means that the battery is connected properly and has started to charge.
Monitor the charger. When the battery indicator light stops flashing and remains lit, your battery is completely charged. Most Ni-Cad battery chargers do not automatically shut off when the proper voltage in the battery is achieved, so remove the hitachi EB1414 drill battery to prevent overcharging (for a completely dead battery, this will take about 16 hours).
Purchase a trickle charger and connect it to your battery when your tools are not in use. A trickle charger will keep the battery "topped-off" by sending a small stream of power to the battery so it does not drain completely while stored.
An overcharged battery can easily explode. To avoid injury, if you suspect your battery is overcharged, disconnect it from the charger and let it sit for 24 hours to allow some of the stored power to dissipate.
